2015 S2FL MVP: Cam Newton

The inaugural season of our MVP award was a pretty open race after week 10.  But by the time the season was over, it was no question.  Ladies and gentlemen, the 2015 S2FL MVP is CAM NEWTON!

cam newton fire

Eagle Zipper Hero owner Christopher Baker was ecstatic to make Cam Newton a FIFTH ROUND pick at the 2015 Draft.  Kelvin Benjamin’s season-ending ACL tear scared a lot of people away from the Carolina offense, but Baker saw the potential in perennial fantasy star Newton and reaped the benefits all season long.  Newton’s stats for the season look like this:

378.36 points (25.22 ppg), 1st OVR in the league
3,544 yards – 33 TDs – 626 Rushing Yards – 8 Rushing TDs

Over Last 4 Games:
126.02 points (31.51 ppg), 1st OVR in the league
1,078 yards – 13 TDs – 199 Rushing Yards – 1 Rushing TD

Cam’s season propelled Eagle Zipper Hero to the playoffs and a 2nd straight Skol Bowl berth, and I have a feeling he will be drafted MUCH higher next year.  Since he’s introduced the world to dabbing, I think he’d be a perfect fit as a Hash-Oiler.

Dab on, Cam.  Our 2015 S2FL MVP!

Updated League Legend Standings

league legends logo

With the conclusion of the 2015 season, the League Legend standings saw a lot of moving happen all over the board.  Let’s take a look at where we stand, and how things differ from where we were a week ago:

Full standings board can be viewed on Google Drive by clicking the following link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1exfn1xIEJRSiF5QOFnq-4XpOO29Ej5JhvleQOY0684s/edit#gid=1818566281

LEAGUE LEGEND STANDINGS

  1. JASON GAYDOS (+20) – 48 points – (up 1 place, from 2nd)
  2. STACY SWENSON (+8) – 36 points – (stays in 2nd)
  3. AL SWENSON (+3) – 33 points – (down 2 places, from 1st)
  4. KYLE ADAMS (+12) – 31 points – (up 3 places, from 7th)
  5. (4t) RYAN SWENSON (+5) – 31 points – (stays in 4th)
  6. JAKE WILSON (+6) – 30 points – (stays in 6th)
  7. (6t) CHRISTOPHER BAKER (+15) – 30 points – (up 3 places, from 9th)
  8. JOHN SWENSON (+2) – 27 points – (down 3 places, from 5th)
  9. RYAN JENSEN (+7) – 25 points – (down 1 place, from 8th)
  10. ALIA SWENSON (+4) – 18 points – (stays in 10th)
  11. BRITTNEY HANSEN (+1) – 15 points – (down 1 place, from 10th)
  12. DREW BROWNING (-) – 12 points
  13. BECCA BAKER (+10) – 10 points
  14. JIM PFAFF (-) – 1 point
  15. (14t) JEFF HITCHCOCK (-) – 1 point

The biggest change is obviously that we have a new League Legend!  Jason is at the top by a large margin now, and it will take a disastrous season from him next year for him to lost the title.  With a 12 point lead ahead of Stacy, we could be entering the Age of Jason.

The biggest movers up the board were Kyle and Baker, whose 3rd and 2nd place finishes respectively moved both of them up 3 places in the standings.  John had the longest drop down the board, after 11th place only netted him 2 points, and saw him move from 5th place to 8th.

With only 8 points separating 3rd and 9th, so many owners could make a big move up the standings next season with a 1st place finish.  Can Stacy or Al pull it off and bump the King off the hill?  Only 12 more months to find out!……. sigh………..

2015 Skol Bowl: An Underdog Tale

skolbowl2015.jpg

THE GREATEST GAME OF THE YEAR IS UPON US!

The 2015 Skol Bowl is here, and in classic S2FL fashion the teams that have made their way there probably weren’t who everybody expected.  One team once sat at 3-6, and the other scored a historically low number of points this season.  But grit, and a little bit of luck, can go a long way.

eaglezipperhero

“I’m gonna win this mofo!”
– Christopher Baker, after Week 11 win

After a week 9, 2-point loss to the Hash-Oilers, Eagle Zipper Hero sat at 3-6, and looked to be a long shot to make the payoffs.  But something would start in that week 9 loss that would shoot Eagle Zipper Hero towards the playoffs and the top of the league.

Cam Newton’s ridiculous run.

From week 9 to Eagle Zipper Hero’s playoff win in week 15, Cam Newton has averaged a RIDICULOUS 31.50 points/week.  This, in part, drove Baker’s team to a 5-game winning streak to finish of the regular season 8-6, and as the 3rd seed in the playoffs.  And he’d save his best for the playoffs, as Cam scored the third-most points in a game all season from ANY PLAYER, with a whopping 46.60 points.  Just LOOK at this stat line:

25-45, 340 yards, 5 TDs
100 rushing yards, 1 TD

Only two players have scored more points in a week this year.  Drew Brees scored 51.30 in that bonkers Week 8 game against the Giants, and get this… David Johnson scored 46.90 points for Eagle Zipper Hero in the same game last week (that’s 93.5 points from TWO PLAYERS… that’s almost as much as the entire ChoklitFudgePoptarts team scored in their week 15 matchup against Clay Matthews Band [94.16]).

aaronrodgersisgay

“Pure luck with that team pieced together.”
– Jason Gaydos, after playoff win over #1 seed ChicagNO Hash-Oilers

Nobody will ever accuse Jason of being a fantasy dunce.  He’s a former league champ who wins with mostly-drafted teams, and will soon sit atop the League Legend standings meaning he is the most successful owner to-date.  But he’ll be the first to admit that this season has been riding on the power of 4-leaf clovers.

Aaron Rodgers is GAY was seeing moderate success in the beginning of the season, starting the year 4-2.  In those first 6 games they would have 3 of their 4 highest scoring games of the season.  This was thanks to the monster starts of Devonta Freeman and DeAndre Hopkins.  But as Freeman and Hopkins cooled off, so did Aaron Rodgers is GAY, as they would lose 3 of their next 4 to fall to 5-5.  A week 10 loss to Eagle Zipper Hero was particularly humiliating, as Jason’s squad was only able to muster 44.85 points… the lowest weekly total of ALL-TIME in S2FL.  That’s only 4.08 points/player!  In fact, Aaron Rodgers is GAY also had the 5th-lowest all-time weekly game in week 14 (62.22 points), and their 2015 season would be the 2nd lowest scoring season in S2FL history (105.61 ppg).

But the points don’t matter when you pull off wins like ARiG did in week 12.

With the wildcard race heating up, Jason would find himself in a curious position.  With a 6-5 record things were looking good, but as the Monday night game was coming to a finish it looked like Jason would drop the week 12 matchup against Jake’s ChoklitFudgePoptarts.  Falling to 6-6 would be damning, since a very difficult week 14 matchup against the Hash-Oilers would most certainly mean a loss, and a 7-7 record at best.  With the possibility of both wildcard teams being 8-6, pulling off a miracle to win in week 12 was crucial.  And miracles are crazy in that sometimes… they actually happen.

willll-0

This blocked FG return for a touchdown would give Aaron Rodger is GAY’s Baltimore defense 6 points, and with 0:00 on the clock, they had the win by less than 4 points.

It was a crushing blow to ChoklitFudgePoptarts, but it was just the lift that Jason would need to sneak into the playoffs.  And when you ride a miracle into the playoffs, you might as well pull off another one once you get there.

After Sunday’s games were over, Kyle’s Hash-Oilers found themselves down to Aaron Rodgers is GAY, but only by 1.32 points.  And with both Willie Snead & Tim Hightower going against Jason’s Joique Bell on Monday night, the Hash-Oilers had to have been feeling good.  Snead has scored 7 or more points 7 times this season, and he was coming off a 14.20 point game in week 14.  Tim Hightower was now the bell-cow in New Orleans, and was coming off a 15.5 point game which saw him carry the ball 28 times.  Joique Bell hadn’t carried the ball more than 8 times in 4 straight games, and had only scored more than 7.5 points twice all season.  The chances of Snead & Hightower outscoring Bell by 2 or more points were quite likely.

But as the 4th quarter wound down Joique Bell would do the unlikely and scamper for a TD and then a clinching 25 yard run (after the Hash-Oilers had retaken the lead with some Snead catches) as the 4th quarter came to a close.  It would be Bell’s best game of the season (15.38 points) and meant a 1.60 point victory over the heavily-favored Hash-Oilers.

So, here we are.  Baker versus Jason in a truly epic battle between two teams that at some point this year seemed like unlikely playoff participants.  Baker has jumped off to the fastest start ever in S2FL, making it to the finals in his first two seasons.  And Jason would like to become the first two-time league champ.  Can he pull off one more miracle, and take down the Cam juggernaut?  Or is Eagle Zipper Hero the play to draw up for victory?

S2FL: The Best & Worst, All-Time

bestandworst.jpg

Football… and even moreso, Fantasy Football… can be a fickle bitch.  Sometimes you’re on top of the world and performing lights-out like the 2007 Patriots, and other times you just can’t seem to get anything going like the 2008 Detroit Lions.  Our league has seen a lot of incredible performances over the years, and a few absolutely horrible ones.  As we continue this league, history will keep becoming more and more prevalent, and I’ve put together a list of the All-Time Best & Worst Weeks and Seasons in Skoli’s II Football League history.  These are just for fun, but hopefully in the future we can build some healthy competition as people fight to be ON a couple of these lists, and OFF the others.  I’ve also left out our awkward, inaugural season experiment, as scoring was MUCH different back then (A separate Special Teams position!?).  So, these records are from 2013 forward.

Without further ado, here are the S2FL’s Best & Worst Performances:

    1,605.88 points (114.71 points/game)

A few interesting takeaways from these lists:

Despite having two of the five worst weeks, all-time, this season AND posting the 2nd-lowest scoring season in league history, Jason is STILL playing for the league championship this week.  That’s winning when you need to right there, folks!

Scoring low will probably get you the Lutefisk.  #1 and #3 on the list of lowest season totals are Brittney’s 2015 Lutefisk season and Jeff’s 2014 Lutefisk season.

Kyle, Stacy & Jake know how to score points in bunches!  They are the only league owners who have two different seasons listed in the 10 Best Season Point Totals.  Kyle in particular has put together the 2nd (2013 Hash Oilers) and 3rd (2015 Hash Oilers) best seasons ever, as far as points are concerned.

Call him the MiddleMan.  Al is the only current owner in the league who does not find himself on any of the best or worst lists.  I guess you can say he’s been consistently… average.

In 2016 I will start transitioning this website from a blog to a full-fledged league site.  When that happens there will be a whole section of the website dedicated to the history of the league.  I can’t wait to see what new history will be made next year, and every one going forward!

Pick ’em Pool Standings: Week 16 Edition

NFL-vector-logos

Ladies and gentlemen, we’re in the home stretch!

As much as I hate it, the season is coming to an end.  As we approach the last two weeks it looks like we’re in a two-person race for the Overall Pick ’em Pool title.  Alia has been on top most of the season, and after week 15 she remains there, with a 2 pick lead over Brittney.  Brittney has made a massive push lately, proving that she has what it takes to be a 2-time champ.  Will Alia hold onto the lead for two more weeks, or will Brittney leapfrog her before the season is said and done?  Or will we get a huge surprise, and see John (who is in 3rd place, 5 picks back) come out of nowhere to take the title?

For now, let’s take a look at the weekly and overall standings:

Week 15

  1. Stacy: 13-3
  2. Brittney: 12-4
  3. Jason: 12-4
  4. Ryan S.: 11-5
  5. Al: 11-5
  6. Baker: 11-5
  7. Alia: 11-5
  8. John: 10-6
  9. Kyle: 9-7
  10. Becca: 0-16
  11. Jake: 0-16
  12. Jensen: 0-16

 Overall Standings

  1. Alia: 140-84
  2. Brittney: 138-86 (-2)
  3. John: 135-89 (-5)
  4. Baker: 131-93 (-9)
  5. Stacy: 130-94 (-10)
  6. Jason: 125-99 (-15)
  7. Al: 124-100 (-16)
  8. Ryan S.: 124-100 (-16)
  9. Kyle: 119-105 (-21)
  10. Becca: 115-109 (-25)
  11. Jake: 111-113 (-29)
  12. Ryan J.: 101-123 (-39)

Jake & Jensen may be at the bottom of the leaderboard for the overall standings, but they are 2 people with the highest banks through 15 weeks.  Jake leads everybody with $15, but with a $35 overall winner prize out of reach, somebody else will be the big cash winner of this Pick ’em Pool.  The current banks look like this:

Jake – $15
Stacy – $10
Al – $10
Alia – $10
Ryan J. – $10
Brittney – $5
Kyle – $5
Jason – $5
Becca – $5
Baker – $0
Ryan S. – $0
John – $0

So, there you have it!  An updated look at everything heading into week 16.  With only two weeks left there is still $45 up for grabs.  Go getcha some!

Update on League Legend Standings

League Legends - 121515.JPG

The regular season has drawn to a close, and MAN what a regular season it was!  Plenty of drama, ups and downs, and LOTS of close games!

As we shift our focus on the playoffs (or the consolation bracket) I wanted to take a look at the updated League Legend Standings, and what the 8 teams remaining could still do to their overall points.

First, let’s look at the teams whose seasons are finished, and how many points they accumulated:

12th Place (1 point) – Brittney

Brittney’s 1 point moves her to 15 points overall, and she currently sits in 11th place.

11th Place (2 points) – John

John’s 2 points moves him up to 27 points overall, and he currently sits in 4th place.

10th Place (3 points) – Al

Al’s 3 points moves him up to 33 points overall, and he currently sits in 1st place still (though this is guaranteed to change).

9th Place (4 points) – Alia

Alia’s 4 points moves her up to 18 points overall, and she currently sits in 9th place.

There are still 8 teams left, and the overall standings could change A LOT depending on where everybody finishes.  Here’s a look at what every team still alive can do to their League Legend ranking:

Ryan Jensen – Currently has 18 points

Jensen is in the consolation bracket as the #8 seed, having just sneaked by Alia in week 14.  He can add 5-8 points to his overall total, meaning he will end the season with 23-26 Legend Points.

Stacy Swenson – Currently has 28 points

The defending champ is the #7 seed and will face off against Ryan S. for the 2nd week in a row.  She can add 5-8 points to her overall total, meaning she will end the season with 33-36 Legend Points.

Ryan Swenson – Currently has 26 points

Ryan faltered in week 14 and couldn’t secure a playoff spot.  He is the #6 seed in the consolation bracket.  He can add 5-8 points to his overall total, meaning he will end the season with 31-34 Legend Points.

Jake Wilson – Currently has 24 points

A blocked punt return for a TD in week 12 ended up being Jake’s demise, but he still had a good season nonetheless.  He holds the #5 seed in the consolation bracket and will face Jensen this week.  He can add 5-8 points to his overall total, meaning he will end the season with 29-32 Legend Points.

Jason Gaydos – Currently has 28 points

Jason is in prime position to take over the title of League Legend.  The only way he doesn’t become the new Legend is if he finishes the season 4th and Kyle finishes 1st.  Jason can add 10-20 points to his overall total, meaning he will end the season with 38-48 Legend Points.

Christopher Baker – Currently has 15 points

Baker put together another one of his patented winning streaks to sneak his way into the playoffs.  He has now made the playoffs in both of his seasons in the league.  Baker can add 10-20 points to his overall total, meaning he will end the season with 25-35 Legend Points.

Becca Baker – Currently has 0 points

The rookie is already planning her path to the top of the Legends board!  This week she will face off against her rival, (and husband) Baker, and with a win could guarantee herself at least 15 points.  That would put her in a tie with 3-year vet Brittney and just behind 4-year vet Alia.  She can finish with 10-20 Legend Points.

Kyle Adams – Currently has 19 points

Other than Jason, Kyle is the only other person who can take Al’s title away from him this season.  He faces off against Jason for the 2nd week in a row, and if he can win the championship, and have Jason finish 4th, then not only will Kyle be the league champ, but he will also be the active League Legend (meaning he would get HEAPED with prizes at the draft, since he’s also the overall points champ!).  Kyle can add 10-20 points to his overall total, meaning he will end the season with 29-39 Legend Points.

So, there you have it!  It looks like there will be a lot of moving and shaking in the League Legend standings this year, and we are 100% guaranteed a new leader!

The Homestretch: Playoff Scenarios

jim-mora-playoffs

Week 13 is a wrap, and the playoff scene is a little clearer.  We have seven teams who are still mathematically alive going into the last week of the season.  It’s not going to be last year, when we had SEVEN TEAMS tie for the 2 wildcard spots at 7-7, but it’s still going to come down to the wire.  Let’s breakdown the playoff scenarios for those teams still alive:

ChicagNO Hash-Oilers (11-2)

Bon division winner; #1 seed secured

Becky Football (9-4)

Angus division winner; #2 seed secured

Aaron Rodgers is GAY (8-5)

Secures #3 seed with:

win against ChicagNO Hash-Oilers in week 14
Loss in week 14, along with losses from both Ragnarly & Eagle Zipper Hero
